Sports leaders oversee the implementation of detailed plans for the World Combat Games (21-30 October), following a 2-day technical workshop in Riyadh, hosted by the Local Organising Committee.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Representatives from the 16 international federations taking part in the World Combat Games 2023, joined detailed technical and operational discussions on a recent site visit to Riyadh, in readiness for the Games.
The workshop was chaired by HH Prince Fahd bin Jalawi, Vice President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC), in the presence of HRH Princess Delayel Bint Nahar Al Saud, CEO of the Asian Games (Riyadh 2034).
The SportAccord delegation was led by its President, Ivo Ferriani, who summed up preparations to date:
“Significant progress has been made to ensure fans and spectators the world over, will experience a Games to remember.
“I would like to thank Stephan Fox, President of Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sports (AIMS) and chair of the combat sports, who has been leading on many aspects of the preparations for the Games, as well as liaison work with the International Federations.
“Competition and cultural events for fans and citizens will be held at the impressive King Saud University and stadium, the perfect venue for the World Combat Games 2023.”
A fan-zone encompassing a Cultural Square and Pavilion, will enable spectators to gather between competitions, experience local culture, and take part in sports demonstrations and activities, laid on by international federations and exhibitors.
Ian Reid, CEO of the 2023 World Combat Games Riyadh, who led the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as CEO, remarked:
“We are extremely proud to be hosting the World Combat Games in Riyadh. While there is still a lot of work to be done, I am confident the efforts of everyone involved will bring the experiences and excitement fans have come to expect.
“We aim to deliver a stand-out edition of the World Combat Games, inspiring many, and encouraging citizens to take up new sports.”
Spring Media, the Sweden-based sports media group, has been awarded exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2023 World Combat Games, with the exception of the MENA region.
Workshop sessions covered every aspect of the Games including: sports specific operations, transport, media, medical, anti-doping, and special events.
